Update: Export to .csv

What We Heard: .csv exports were lacking important data, such as the results for each participant on a block-by-block basis, or ranked data where a segmentation filter has been applied.

What We Did: Participant-level exports are now available by clicking the 'Download' icon on the participants table on your survey results page. Segmented results can be exported by clicking the 'Download' icon when any segmentation filter is applied to a ranking block.

Plans it's available to: For a limited time, the new export features are available to all users. However, exporting will become a premium-only feature later this year.

Forced Ranking vs. Skippable Ranking

What We Heard: We've had many requests over the past year to allow for more customization on ranking block optionality (aka whether there is a Skip button or not). On some blocks (eg. Pair Rank) the Skip was always visible, on other blocks (eg. Order Rank) it was not possible to Skip.

What We Did: All ranking blocks now come with a checkbox option during survey setup to change between "Required" or "Optional". By default, this is set to optional and can be changed with one easy click

How It Works: Ticking the "Required" check will remove the default "Skip" button for participants.

Plans it's available to: All OpinionX users :)

August 2022 Bug Fixes

We pushed an update live this morning to resolve many of the bugs which have been affecting usability of OpinionX in recent weeks. These fixes included:

  • The link that creates a Sample Survey.

  • The broken survey overview stats.

  • The 'score' column for Agreement Rank results when the segmentation filter is applied.

  • The "Takes x minutes" section of the survey welcome page now has more accurate estimates.

  • Order Rank results sometimes skipping an "nth" position.

  • An email notification issue for Pro and Scale customers.

  • The survey duplication button.

  • CI/CD pipeline improvements.

  • Improved security for survey invitations.

  • Survey previews now work regardless of whether the survey is set as Open or Closed.

  • Other minor bugs and improvements.

Thank you for your patience while we fixed these and to our OpinionX users that helped report and catalog these issues with us.

Stripe Fixes: Proration, Single Subscription, Account Deletion

What Was Wrong: If you upgraded from Pro to Scale, you ended up with two active subscriptions and paying the full amount twice. Also, if you deleted your OpinionX account, it didn't automatically delete your Stripe subscription.

What We Did: Stripe (our payments processor) is now setup to automatically prorate the amount you pay and transition your single active subscription if you upgrade your pricing plan mid-period. If you delete your OpinionX account, Stripe will now automatically cancel your subscription.

Whitelabel your OpinionX survey

What We Heard: Many OpinionX customers, particularly agencies, had negative commercial impact due to the mandatory inclusion of the '⚡ by OpinionX' button on the survey footer.

What We Did: We've added a new toggle to survey settings which removes this button.

Plans it's available to: Whitelabeling is available to all paid tier customers on Pro, Scale and Enterprise plans.

'Add New Block' Interface

What We Heard: Users did not like that OpinionX would automatically pick a random block type when you clicked the (+) button and that there was no explanation of what each block does / what it looks like in the survey.

What We Did: We added a modal window which appears (1) when you create a new survey and (2) whenever you click the (+) button to add a new block. This window separates the blocks into Ranking Blocks and Survey Blocks.

How It Works: When you hover over a block type, a window appears which shows what that block looks like to survey participants and a short sentence describing why you would add it to your project.

Small updates to Text Response block

1. Prompt Text The prompt text 'I think that...' did not suit the way most users were implementing Text Response blocks. We've changed this to 'Add your answer here...' across all supported survey languages. This has automatically updated across all surveys.

2. Toggles We've added additional customization opportunities by adding two new toggles to the Text Response block during survey setup: (i) 'Required' which lets you make responding mandatory for participants, and (ii) 'Allow multiple answers' which can be disabled to restrict participants to just one response, if required. This will not change the existing format of any of your surveys.

Order Rank & Agreement Rank

What We Heard: The Pair Rank format suits stack ranking projects with 10+ opinions, but many projects of 3-10 opinions would gather the same data quicker using a drag-and-drop method that shows all opinions.

What We Did: We built a new ranking block for stack ranking surveys called Order Rank, available as of today for all surveys on OpinionX. Additionally, we've split the "agree/disagree" voting format into a separate block from Pair Rank and called it 'Agreement Rank'. This marks the first step in expanding the range of ranking methods available on OpinionX as we continue to work towards becoming the best ranking research tool possible.

How It Works: When creating an OpinionX survey, simply switch the Pair Rank block to an Order Rank or Agreement Rank block. The setup process is identical otherwise. For participants, the Order Rank block will show the full list of all opinions you've included which they are asked to drag-and-drop into their order of preference.

Knowledge Base Guide: How to use an Order Rank question in your stack ranking survey // How to use an Agreement Rank question in your stack ranking survey.

Plans it's available to: Users on all tiers can use Order Rank and Agreement Rank blocks in their surveys.

Adding 'Scores' to your stack rank results

What We Heard: Knowing what order opinions are ranked is only a small piece of the puzzle. Users frequently asked us to see the underlying 'importance score' so that they could understand things like why some opinions passed out others (ie. any opinions that had only tiny gaps in importance between them).

What We Did: While we initially worried that showing the score would overcomplicate the results, we realized over time that you can't make informed decisions without. As of today, you can now see the score for each opinion on the results table and in any data exports.

How It Works: Just like the 'Rank' column, the 'Score' is automatically calculated. To learn more about how the OpinionX algorithms compare and rate opinions, check out our Knowledge Base docs "What does the Score mean on OpinionX?" and the more detailed "How does the OpinionX rating algorithm work?".

Plans it's available to: This update has been rolled out for users on all OpinionX tiers and will also show for all surveys, both old and new :)

Example:

The new 'Score' column highlighted in the center of this screenshot by a gold outline box.

Here's to more informed and insightful stack ranking 🥂

June 2022 Backend Update

Hola At 9pm GMT+1 on Wednesday June 2nd 2022, we are rolling out a number of changes to the OpinionX backend. This post summarizes the changes that were included in this update and offers a more detailed breakdown below of some important points worth knowing.

  • OpinionX will no longer count partially completed surveys; participants must reach the 'Finish Page' of your survey before their data is added to your results page.

  • OpinionX is now hosted on Microsoft Azure. Your data will still be stored in the Republic of Ireland.

  • Segmentation filters will calculate faster due to simplifications in our database architecture.

  • We've moved all email communication between OpinionX and our users to Customer.io.

  • We've moved from Drift to Intercom for live chat and have migrated our Knowledge Base documentation and guides from our Squarespace blog to Intercom too (check that out here).

  • We've added Beamer as the new home of our Changelog (you're currently reading this via Beamer).

  • We've added Sentry to help us spot bugs and product issues faster. This means that you might get a popup box when you hit an error, asking you to share contextual information about what you were trying to do before you hit that error so that we can fix stuff that breaks faster.

We spent the first few months of 2022 focused on these changes because we believe they are important foundational steps we needed to take before we start building the next layers of OpinionX.

I'm really excited to ship this — not just because it will make your surveys more accurate and efficient, but also because it means that we can get back to focusing on the most important thing — building great new features to help supercharge your stack ranking user research.

If you have any questions about the above changes, just send an email to hello@opinionx.co and a member of the team will get you sorted :)

Backend Update & Upcoming Features in May/June 2022

A lot has changed since we started building OpinionX in late 2019; not just that there are now 1,500+ research teams out there powered by OpinionX (!!!) but also that we've got a much better idea of what you're all using OpinionX for now.

With this in mind, we've had to rethink many of the initial assumptions that went into the backend architecture of OpinionX. We've spent the past few months working on updates which will allow us to build and ship new features faster, have less bugs bothering you, and grow OpinionX as a leaner and more efficient research tool during this next phase of company growth.

This has meant spending way more time than we'd have liked working behind-the-scenes stuff that you might not see an immediate impact from. Just know that your research is safer, faster and more robust because of this work.

Once this backend update has been shipped, we've got a bunch of exciting new features planned that we'll be rolling out during the summer, such as:

  • Order Rank → a new ranking method where your participants drag-and-drop all options into their preferred order.

  • Exporting →  updating our export functionality to give you much more detailed data on your participants' individual-level preferences and the voting breakdown on each of your survey blocks.

  • Whitelabeling → Scale tier users will be able to remove the "Powered by OpinionX" button from the footer of their surveys.

  • Fixes → we're got solutions planned that will resolve a range of minor issues on OpinionX such as auto-save overwrites, the branded exit page overriding premium user edits, and billing page access.

I'm looking forward to getting these updates into your hands very soon! If you have any feedback or ideas you'd like to share, send it my way at daniel@opinionx.co.
