What is a pairwise comparison survey?
Pairwise comparison surveys rank a list of options by showing participants two random choices at a time and asking which they prefer. Across many pairs and participants, every option earns a score for how often it won.
On OpinionX surveys, this method is called Pair Rank. Each participant votes on a set number of pairs and the survey automatically calculates the win rate for each option. Build a custom survey with a pairwise comparison section using OpinionX’s free survey builder for advanced market research methods.

Alternative methods...

FAQ
-
By Win Rate: an option's wins divided by every pair it appeared in, shown as 0 to 100. An option that won 8 of 10 pairs scores 80. Elo and Glicko exist too, but their scores are hard to explain, which is why OpinionX dropped Glicko-2 in 2023.

Enough that every pair is seen at least three times. Total pairs are n(n-1)/2, so 12 options make 66 pairs and 198 votes. At 10 votes each that's 20 participants; at 15 votes, 14. The Pair Rank builder calculates this for you as you set it up.

Both rank long lists. Pairwise comparison suits options that take a sentence to read, since participants weigh two at once. MaxDiff shows four or five short options and asks for best and worst, collecting more data per screen. Short labels, MaxDiff. Full statements, pairwise.
