November 2023 Changelog

Allowed Email Domains

Allow anyone with the same email domain as you to join your workspace using the new "Allowed Email Domains" feature in survey settings. Once enabled, your workspace will appear to new sign-ups from your company/organization during their onboarding flow.

--

  • Fixed the grey filter that was being shown over images during Image Rank voting.

  • Fixed workspace invites so that only "Admin" users can invite other Admins.

  • Fixed an issue that was affecting Text Response blocks displaying results beyond the participant limit.

  • Fixed a number of bugs that were affecting the Opinion Details window.

  • Updated the design of the sign-in / sign-up windows.

  • Removed the "Votes" and "Opinions" graphs from overview section of the survey results page.

  • Replaced the 7-Day "Participants" overview graph with a 21-Day version.

  • Hovering over a bar on the results chart for a Multiple-Choice question now shows the full text of the option rather than a cut of "..." version.

  • Implemented a new system to prevent duplicate participant logs during product updates.

  • Squashed an array of nasty little bugs that were causing crashes/errors.

Export all results to a single spreadsheet

Aggregated Results Exporting

Previously, exporting your survey results created a separate .csv file for each survey block. Not anymore!

Now you can pick between exporting the Raw Data alongside a new option called "Aggregated Results", which gives you all your survey data combined into a single spreadsheet. The Aggregated Results export is formatted so that each row represents one participant and the columns display the entirety of their voting data from your survey.

Check out this real survey and export example to see how the new exporting format works :)

--

Other Improvements

  • Join Existing Workspace: When you invite a teammate to join your research workspace, they no longer end up with two workspaces in their account (yours and a separate one for them).

  • Some bug fixes and improvements, such as one annoying issue that was preventing people from copy/pasting text with line breaks during survey set up.

October 2023 Changelog

1. Premium Sample Surveys

Previously, opening a sample surveys created a copy on your own account (meaning free users couldn't test any premium features like Segmentation, Participant Details, and Exporting). We've fixed this experience so all Sample Surveys now have the full range of premium features enabled.

2. Workspace Invite Links

During onboarding when new users set up their workspace, they can now copy a shareable invite link rather than having to add email addresses one by one. The same link can be found by existing users in their workspace settings under the "Invite Teammates" section.

3. Viewer Link Options

Viewer Links allow you to share access to your survey results without anyone having create an OpinionX account. You can now include an option that lets those viewers save access to the survey by creating an OpinionX account, streamlining their inclusion in your research workspace (without any extra cost).

---

Other Updates

  • Email Validation: Increasing account security with email validation for new users.

  • Participant Identifiers: Removed limit on surveys having multiple of each identifier type.

  • Duplication Errors: Improved how we reference participant tokens to prevent duplicate profiles.

  • Pricing Tier Fix: Upgrades were applying to users but not workspaces, meaning new surveys were incorrectly being created on the free tier by premium accounts.

  • Other minor bug fixes and improvements :)

New: Rank Change by Segment + Workspace Invite Links

Opinion Details

Open any ranking option and see a breakdown of its score for every possible segment.

The new "Rank Change by Segment" component in the Opinion Details window

  • Segmentation shows how your results change when you pick one segment. This new feature does the opposite — pick any voting option and see its rank + score broken down for every possible segment.

  • This new feature is specifically for assumption testing surveys. When you have one key ranking option, it previously took a TON of manual work to check its rank/score for every individual segment. Now simply open the Opinion Details window and see which segment ranks your key statement highest.

  • Check out this quick video to see the power of this new feature in action!

Workspace Improvements

  • Workspace Invite Links: Send this copy/paste link to your teammates so they can join your workspace, giving them automatic Viewer access to all existing and future surveys.

  • Onboarding Invites: New users can now invite teammates to their workspace during their onboarding.

  • "Add To Workspace": If you've been working with someone on a bunch of surveys already, just go to the team section of your survey settings and hit the "Add To Workspace" option to officially make them part of your team for future surveys :)

Multiplayer: OpinionX workspaces are now team-based for everyone!

Singleplayer → Multiplayer

Collaborating with teammates on OpinionX is now 10x easier!

  • Invite unlimited teammates to your workspace, giving them automatic Viewer access to all surveys.

  • Pricing plans now apply to your entire workspace, not just one user. For example, upgrading your workspace now allows any workspace teammates to also create premium tier surveys too.

  • Pick any teammates to help you set up and moderate your survey as Editors. Each survey has a limited number of Editor Seats. You can invite any other users (teammates or external) to fill these Editor seats. Free users can also allocate up to 2 Editors seats per survey.

  • We're already working on the second batch of Multiplayer improvements — if you have some specific functionality in mind, please let us know at hello@opinionx.co!

Other Changes ️

  • Bulk Import Images → When importing files for Image Rank surveys, you can now select multiple images at the same time, rather than the previous 'one-by-one' approach.

  • Auto-Approve Text Responses → This new Pro feature adds all Text Response options to a ranking block of your choice for any subsequent participants. Read more about it here.

  • Max Number of Text Responses → You can now set a maximum number of separate answers that a participant can submit on a Text Response block. This has been added alongside the Auto-Approve feature to prevent participants from hijacking the ranking block with a high volume of responses.

  • Various Bug Fixes & Improvements → Bug that was causing issues reordering blocks has been fixed, along with root issues causing crashes throughout the product.

Compare Segments + Order Rank Improvements

Order Rank Improvements

1. You can now rank by clicking or drag-and-dropping (GIF example below). 2. More whitespace for easier scrolling on mobile devices. 3. Up / down arrows for easily finetuning your ranking. 4. Improved drag-and-drop experience in multiple minor ways.

Try the improved Order Rank experience on this example survey, no login required :)

Compare Segments

Pick a second segment of participants to compare their results side-by-side. I've been playing with this feature on some old surveys and have found a BUNCH of new insights — it's a huge upgrade to analysis capabilities on OpinionX!

Bug fixes and minor improvements

  • Fixed an error that was preventing users from removing Viewer collaborators.

  • Fixed a bug that was creating uncancellable segmentation filters for free users.

  • Fixed a bug that was preventing survey renaming from the dashboard.

  • Increased survey submission protection against spammy bots via JWT validation

Back Arrow, Full Results Filtering, Click-to-Segment (June 2023)

Back Arrow

The survey back arrow now lets participants navigate back through the survey. It's automatically available on all surveys and can be found beside the progress bar or by using the back arrow on your keyboard.

Results Filtering

We've added a significant improvement to our segmentation feature in this update. Previously, segmentation filters were applied just to one ranking results block. Now, a segment filter updates the entire results page. To align with this, we've created a new segment widget that lives in the bottom-left corner of your screen.

My favorite part of this update is how much it helps with identifying the right participants to invite to follow-up interviews (ie. the Discovery Sandwich research framework). Here's an example of the segmentation causing the "Survey Participants" table to be filtered:

Click-to-Segment

Segmentation is the most powerful feature on OpinionX. To make it more accessible and easier to discover, you can now click on any Multiple-Choice bar chart to activate a segmentation filter. We'll continue to make this feature more user-friendly and intuitive over time :)

Additional Updates

  • Fixed breakpoints and spacing on the survey footer.

  • Points Rank has some additional data on the results table now (Mean and Percentage scores).

  • We've added some blurring on the Survey Participants table to make it clearer which participants aren't included in the results page after you've surpassed your participant limit.

  • Some copy/label improvements to make OpinionX surveys easier to setup.

  • The survey progress indicator now takes into account branched routes.

  • Automated popup suggests switching from Order Rank to Pair Rank during survey setup when you've got 12+ ranking options.

  • Other minor updates :)

Custom Survey URLs

Customers on Pro tier or higher can now edit their survey link to have a custom path. For more info on custom URL rules, check out our Knowledge Base).

Other Updates:

  1. Segmentation filters now apply to all ranking blocks at the same time (and soon will apply to all blocks on the results page). In line with this update, we've added a new Segmentation widget to the bottom-left corner of your Results Page which will be a central hub for many analysis features we'll be adding over coming months (screenshot below).

  2. All blocks now have a "Duplicate Block" icon during survey setup now, which is particularly useful when paired with the Bulk Import feature to add a long list of options + Survey Branching where you want variations of the same ranking block but personalized for specific branches of your survey.

  3. Always show "Survey Participants" table shows for all surveys rather than only those with Identify blocks.

Branching, Multi-Variable Segmentation, Identify Block, and a Frontend Facelift

Two weeks of OpinionX product updates just dropped — here's everything need to know...

Survey Branching

Users on Scale or higher can now send survey participants to different blocks depending on their answers. Two examples below of Survey Branching in action:

  1. Screening Out: Use a Multiple Choice question at the start of your survey to send participants outside of your research requirements to the Finish Page so that they don't add unnecessary noise to your results.

  2. Separate Ranking Blocks: Use a Multiple Choice question to send participants to different questions and then use the "Survey Branching" options to bring them back to a common point in your survey.

Multi-Variable Segmentation

Segmentation just got a whole lot more powerful! You can now create multi-variable segments, combining many answers from one Multiple Choice question or creating conditions that span multiple questions. Here's an example:

^ In the above example, the logic used is [Basic OR Team OR Enterprise] AND [Sales/Marketing].

Identify Block

The best part about the "Email Collection" block on OpinionX is that it gives you a way associate an identifiable datapoint with each participant (especially in .csv exports, the Survey Participants table, or the Participant Details window). But we often heard that people wanted this same functionality but for other data, like people's names. So we've expanded the Email Collection block into a more flexible "Identify" block capable of collecting any category of identifiable data:

Updated Design

You might notice that everything on OpinionX looks a little bit different now. We've updated our UI framework from Vue2 to Vue3, which has changed how some components look. One change I love is that Multiple Choice results charts are now full-width (example below). We'll continue to refine our UI over the coming weeks, so if you find anything particularly frustrating in the new design, please let us know!

Features we're working on:

  • Back Arrow for Participants

  • Custom Survey URLs

  • Full Results Segmentation

May 2023, Updates Batch 1

Some quick bug fixes and navigation improvements shipped so far this first week of May:

  • Fixed a bug that was preventing ranking options from being copied over on Pair and Image Rank blocks when using the survey duplication feature.

  • Block setup settings have been split into Free and Premium, along with wording improvements and more tooltip explanations to make their functions clearer.

  • The Participant Details window now shows the actual voting data for blocks like Pair and Points Rank, instead of just their rank.

  • Fixed a bug that was causing the wrong Points Rank scores to show on some results pages.

Coming in the next few days: We've finished testing and are prepping the release of survey branching, a veeeeery exciting new featuring coming to Scale and Enterprise tiers to allow you to use Multiple Choice blocks to screen out participants, collect additional data on key segments, and split participants to separate ranking blocks within the same survey.

Bulk Import Survey Options (April 2023, Updates Batch 4)

You can now copy and paste a list of voting options into an OpinionX survey block in one click with our new Bulk Import feature!

Hit the "Import" button at the bottom of any ranking or Multiple Choice block to open up the Bulk Import window. You can copy and paste from plain text documents or spreadsheets. Each line will turn into one "opinion". If your text is over 480 characters, it will automatically be broken into two opinions.

Other than Bulk Import, we also cleaned up some old backend programs that are no longer used so that OpinionX can run that little bit faster and smoother than before :)

What we're working on now: Survey Branching and more data collection methods (Name, Phone Number, Username, etc). Expect these new capabilities in early May.

New Ranking Blocks (April 2023 Product Updates, Batch 3)

  • Image Rank: Borrows the same underlying voting/scoring format as Pair Rank but specifically for stack ranking any set of images. You can include text captions and use all standard image types (PNG, JPG, GIF).

  • Points Rank: Give participants a certain number of points (10 by default) and allow them to allocate them amongst a list of options at their own discretion. Great for identifying the magnitude of importance rather than just relative preference (ie. separate the *really* important options from the rest).

  • Both new block types come with all the same great analysis features as our existing ranking types, such as segmentation, .csv exports, participant-level data, custom ranking criteria, etc.

Other Updates

  • New question format: Dropdown List. You can now change your Multiple Choice block to a dropdown select list. Click the settings icon when editing the Multiple Choice block and select the "Dropdown" checkbox to enable this format.

  • Character limits have been drastically increased. Question and Description text fields now accept up to 5000 characters, while ranking statements have been increased from 280 to 480 characters.

  • We've fixed the issue with Finish Page editing, which previously meant that any empty Finish Page text fields would default to the freemium call-to-action text. Now you can leave any finish page fields blank that you want to, plus some improvements to how survey language choice is implemented on the Finish Page too.

  • Added a "Clear Survey" button on the participant results table, making it easier to wipe participant data from your survey after you've done a test run (includes a strong warning popup to prevent accidental deletions).

  • Various other minor bug fixes and usability improvements :)

Updating the algorithms powering Pair and Order Rank

The most common question we get from users is to explain the logic behind the Glicko-based scoring system on OpinionX. While Glicko (the Bayesian rating system popular in online multiplayer gaming) is a pretty robust and scalable system for our Pair Rank and Order Rank questions, researchers were often undermined by the inability to explain how opinions were scored and ranked by our 'black box' ranking engine.

Ultimately, we felt that this downside outweighed the benefits of Glicko as a scoring system, so we've rebuilt Pair and Order Rank blocks on two new ranking formulas. Our focus has been to make it much easier to understand and explain how OpinionX calculated the scores for your opinions so that you can ensure that your research projects have a higher chance of succeeding in generating impact.

The two new methods — Dowdall Borda Counts for Order Rank and Win Rate Analysis for Pair Rank — are both explained in greater detail (with screenshots and examples) here: New Ranking Formulas (April 2023 Product Update)

Note: this update does not change how participants experience your existing OpinionX surveys, only how the ranked scores are calculated on the backend. The update went live this morning (Apr 12th).

  • We fixed the Agreement Rank block so that it automatically is set to show every opinion to participants, one-by-one, rather than the previous default limit of 10 votes per participant.

  • Improved the voting transitions on ranking blocks for survey participants.

  • Added additional Knowledge Base links contextually throughout the product.

  • Some usability improvements, like pressing 'Enter' to add another ranking option during survey setup.

March 2023 Product Updates

We spent the last few months raising our angel round, hiring, and planning our product roadmap for the coming year. Suuuuuper excited to be back to shipping new features and functionality for OpinionX :)

--

Set a minimum and/or maximum number of opinions for participants to rank

We've added a new functionality to Order Rank blocks on OpinionX to allow you to choose a minimum and/or maximum number of options a participant can select. This update is available to customers on Pro tier or higher and can be found in the block settings section during survey setup.

--

Other bugs fixes and features shipped this month:

  • The min/max feature explained above is also available for Multiple Choice blocks.

  • Edit the number of Pair Rank votes from the default 10-votes to any number of pair votes you want.

  • Exporting a Text Response block now includes the participant number (eg. "Participant 24") and their email address, if you've collected it during your survey setup. Previously these exports only included the participant ID, which couldn't be matched to other data exports.

  • Some users were experiencing issues with the Share, Preview and Help button at the top of their survey being unclickable. An iframe error for Google sign-in was causing this issue and has been removed.

  • Customers can now access their billing details via a button on their account page (this button was accidentally removed during a previous update of the pricing page).

  • Fixed bugs related to segmentation and exporting for Scale and Enterprise users.

  • Added more tooltips to the Survey Results page to help make everything that bit clearer for users :)

Pricing Update — Taking Effect at 11am on Nov 25th

TLDR: We're removing a bunch of the limits/caps on the free tier, while also aligning the paid plans to clearer use cases that we can expand upon over the coming months (Pro for customization and collaboration, Scale for advanced analysis, Enterprise for bespoke research and support). Note: price changes won't affect any existing subscriptions.

Free The 1-block limit and cap of 25 participants per survey were preventing a lot of people from launching successful stack ranking surveys. OpinionX should be the first place anyone comes to when they've got things to rank. To ensure that's the case, we've removed the 1-block limit and doubled the participant cap to 50 for all free-tier surveys.

Pro [$30/month, $240/year]

Our Pro tier unlocks survey customization and collaboration. This ranges from question customizations (eg. hiding the 'Skip' option on ranking questions) to branding (hiding the OpinionX button and our branded Finish Page call-to-action) to collaboration (free users can still add Guest collaborators, but only Pro or higher can add Editors). We've also doubled the participant limit for Pro from 50 to 100.

Scale [$60/month, $480/year] The only people who need to upgrade to Scale are those that require advanced analysis tools, like segmentation, exporting to .csv, individual-level results, and (very soon) things like conditional branching. Like the other tiers, we've doubled the participant limit for Scale to 1,000/survey. Scale tier also comes with 3 Editor seats and the ability to add extra seats for a fixed monthly cost.

Enterprise [$150/month, $1200/year] If you're a team running continuous prioritization and ranking research, our Enterprise tier is for you. It includes custom export requests, 1:1 research consultancy, priority support, and a giant 2,500 participant cap per project. We've brought the price of our Enterprise way down by 70% based on feedback, so that it's actually affordable for the teams that need it most. Enterprise plans come with 10 premium seats and the option to add additional seats for a fixed cost.

Education We've opened a separate set of pricing plans for educators, school administrators, students and academics, giving them 70% off our current pricing plans. We've had everything from students in rural communities to Ivy League academics sharing the love for OpinionX, so we hope this initiative helps more of you to get the data you need for your work. Learn more.

Where can I learn more about these pricing tiers? Our pricing page will be updated once these new pricing plans go live between 11am-12pm GMT on Friday Nov 25th. That's where you'll find a breakdown on the features and usage limits for each of our subscription tiers (plus info on what features will be coming to each premium plan very soon).

October Usability Improvements

Another month focused on usability improvements, UI facelifts and backend upgrades.

  • We've fixed a bunch of bugs that were impacting collaboration and inviting teammates.

  • We've upgraded how we ship new updates so that users are far less likely to be negatively impacted by new feature releases.

  • Some participant-facing bugs in surveys were found and fixed. We also updated the animations on ranking blocks to make it clearer for participants when they've moved to a new block.

  • We updated multiple frameworks and libraries to newer versions, improving our security, crash rate and product speed.

  • Stripe now automatically calculates VAT for European customers.

Now that we've (finally) got many of these improvements out of the way, we're spending the rest of November and December updating our pricing model and getting some GREAT new features into your hands :)

Stay tuned!

September Usability Improvements & Bug Fixes

We've been dripping out usability and bug fixes for the past few days with the aim of improving your experience of OpinionX. Here are some of the projects that have gone live:

  • Order Rank now shows your statements in the order you add them (unless Randomize is enabled).

  • Multiple Choice blocks now have "Randomize"  and "Required" checkboxes available for greater customization during survey setup.

  • When you change between ranking blocks, you won't lose your question or list of ranking statements.

  • A whole load of security improvements and minor design changes that aren't worth mentioning individually :)

We're continuing to work on squashing other bug and crash culprits to get the quality of OpinionX to a standard that we're proud of. If you come across any issues, please do let us know by sending us a message in our chat or email hello@opinionx.co.

Homepage Updates: Sample Surveys, List Design, and more.

We've shipped an update to our user homepage on Monday evening (05/Sep/22), which included:

  • Sample Survey Gallery → with one-click examples of different use cases complete with full sample voting data. These sample surveys are there to help you see what a finished OpinionX survey looks like, to allow you to play around with the results analysis features, and to see different block types in action.

  • Updated Survey List Design → Many OpinionX users have 30+ surveys and the old design was too big and blocky as their usage scaled. We've streamlined the list design to fit more on screen in a more aesthetically-pleasing manner.

  • New Empty State → For new users or people with no surveys yet, you'll see a new and improved starting screen which features better sign-posting to the different starting points you can take. This now includes a link to the Sample Survey Gallery and an embedded video to give you the help you need to get started.
